The Army Men’s 7s teams were unable to complete a hat-trick of stage win, but were still crowned overall champions of the Super Series Sevens following a semi-final berth in the final event at Bury St Edmunds on Saturday.
The Red Shirts had put themselves into a dominant position after claiming victory in the first two tournaments at Farnham and Newbury, and they continued on their merry way with group stage wins against HMP Barbarians (36-0) and Vaquita Fiji Warriors (14-10).
Some more dazzling play ensured a 36-7 quarter-final success against Vaquita Hammerheads, but their treble dreams were ended by Boom Beavers with a 17-7 last-four reverse.
Shogun went onto win the final 40-5, but the 12 points Army accrued from their semi-final run left them top of the standings.
The Red Shirts ended on 52, Shogun runners-up with 45 and Apache taking the bronze medal ahead of Vaquita Fiji Warriors.
Next up for the Army is the British Elite Sevens event at Newport Salop RFC tomorrow (Thursday).
They have been drawn in Pool B with the Royal Air Force, Akuma Rugby Agents and Vaquita Hammerheads, while Pool A features Petelo All Stars, Scimitar, Jesters and Apache.
